Mini Review
This book is a story about the notorious serial killer in U.S. history, Jeffrey Dahmer. Dahmer killed at least 17 people and conducted heinous acts with their corpses during the late 70s to 80s. He was eventually incarcerated in the 90s where he would die in prison. This story is told through the perspective of the author, Derf Backderf, who knew Dahmer when they went to high school together. The author recounted moments from Dahmer’s mutilating animals to his being a social outcast in school. Everyone thought Dahmer was a strange guy. He also had a lot of issues. His parents went through a nasty divorce, he was an alcoholic, and was in the closet for being gay (when people weren’t as open to homosexuality in the 70s). The author seems sympathetic towards Dahmer, thinking things could have been different for him if others noticed his issues in time. Could Dahmer have been prevented from being a serial killer?
I found this story very interesting. While I would never condone Dahmer’s actions, it is interesting to see the mind of a killer and see why they did what they did. It goes without saying that Dahmer was a distrubed individual and he truly needed help. I don’t know if he could have gotten that help given the time frame because people weren’t as aware of mental illnesses as we are now. Regardless, it is a true horror story not for the faint of heart. I would recommend this to 16 year old given the violent content of the story.
